Yixing pottery is world-renowned for being made from earthenware from Yixing in Jiangsu Province. The use of this clay for the manufacture of wares has been known in Yixing since the Song Dynasty (960-1279), as evidenced by archaeological excavations in the area, which have unearthed teapots, known as Zisha, and numerous wares made from this type of clay.
Yixing ware has been exported to Europe since the 17th century. The most sought-after pieces were made during the Ming dynasty, a unique period for decorative arts in China.
It is a unique type of pottery, recognised worldwide by institutions and collectors alike, not only because it is found in the small region of Jiangsu, in Yixing, but also because of its material properties. It has the ability to transpire water, which is beneficial for the tea. It also helps to preserve the flavour better by maintaining the ideal temperature for a longer period of time. For the same reason, it is also beneficial for the manufacture of bonsai pots. It has been proven that the best type of pots for the optimal preservation of bonsai are those made of Yixing clay. The beauty of the material is also noteworthy. Yixing clay can be of different shades: golden, dark brown and, most famously, purple. The craftsmen working in Yixing have a great tradition and skill in the firing and finishing of this type of pottery. Once the piece is finished, you can see, at first glance, that the colour and delicacy of the work is far superior to that of other centres.
Nowadays it is very rare to find quality earthenware even in Yixing. Such was the volume of production in earlier times that clays in better condition are scarce today. For this reason, the antique pieces shown below are highly sought after.
