Agate ring, Qing dynasty

Ring carved in agate. The outside faces are decorated in relief in the form of a flying dragon amidst clouds. The transparency and quality of the carving are exceptional, and it is in very good condition. This type of ring is worn on the thumb of the right hand to attach the bowstring when archery is practised. Over time they have become more decorative than functional.
