Agate Snuff Bottle, Qing dynasty, Qianlong

Awarded For. 950 €
Lot 14.
Description.

Snuff bottle carved from a single piece of agate and, on the other side, the lid. The different shades of agate match the carving of two squirrels at the top. The rest of the body is in the shape of a gourd bottle with the detail of a cord and a flower, placed around the waist. The lid is in the shape of a pair of coins symbolising abundance. The transparency and quality are exceptional, and it is in very good condition.

Heilongjiang agate is found in the northwest of the province. This carbon dioxide mineral is of gem grade and is a variant of chalcedony. Agate from this region has beautiful and warm colours, rich colours and a hard texture, very useful for carved crafts. This product was used as a tribute in the Qing dynasty.

The appearance of squirrels has a meaning of good luck "吉祥如意" and happiness in misfortune. The squirrel is a rodent, native to India, Vietnam and Laos, which grows in evergreen trees during the summer. In traditional Chinese culture it is a symbol of longevity, like the rat, and generally a good omen. They also have many offspring and are therefore considered lucky, which is why they are depicted on many items.
