Carved agate figurine ‘Sages on the mountain’, Qing Dynasty

A beautiful milky-coloured agate with greyish undertones and amber-coloured spots, a product of the natural bark of the mineral.

The figure is carved, maintaining the structure of the stone, in the form of a large steep mountain, with small grottoes where two characters, trees and lingzhis, with twisted branches and delicate leaves, are arranged. These trees and mushrooms are strategically carved in the amber-toned points, taking advantage of the natural colours of the mineral, to highlight these images against the soft background. The piece is placed on a wooden base carved to size, with relief and fretwork details of branches, ruyis and flowers. It shows age patina. Qing dynasty (1644-1912) or later.
