Carved jade figure, Eastern Han dynasty

Jade figurine carved in the form of a protective lion, showing stains or patina due to age. The lion is lying on all four legs with its head facing forward. The face is composed of two bulging eyes, a large and closed mouth, two ears and fur in the form of a spiral. During the Han dynasty a sculptural tradition emerged with greater interest in the representation of animals and fabulous beasts in durable materials such as jade. Inspired by Taoist philosophy, which began to spread among the upper echelons, immortality was sought.
