Carved jade figurine ‘Cranes’, Qing dynasty

Awarded For. 475 €
Lot 211.
Description.

A beautifully carved jade figure of greenish/yellowish hue.  On an elliptical base is an intricately detailed scene depicting stylized cranes in various poses on a serene pond, surrounded by large blooming lotuses and water lilies. All of this is carved with great skill, showing incised details such as the birds' plumage; in relief, such as the scrolls of branches and sinuous leaves; and openwork, such as the meticulous way in which the birds have been sculpted, elegantly delineated where the perforated elements give an effect of depth to the piece and also allow for the incision of light through the clear jade.

In traditional Chinese culture, cranes are a symbol of longevity and good fortune, while the lotus and water lily are associated with purity and spiritual perfection.
