Description.

A jade figure in the form of a beast. The animal is showing its fangs with a menacing expression and a crouching body. Elements such as the hair and face are very well depicted. In ancient Chinese myths and legends, mythical beasts drove away evil spirits. They were depicted on cloth and objects of various materials. In very good condition.

During the Han dynasty, a sculptural tradition emerged with a greater interest in depicting fabulous animals and beasts in durable materials such as jade. Inspired by Taoist philosophy, which began to spread among the upper echelons, who sought immortality. Monumental stone sculptures of animals and their small jade counterparts were found in the tombs. It is believed that they were meant to protect their owner and open the way to paradise.
