Description.

White jade pendant, carved in the shape of mythical beasts. The figure depicts a dragon turtle carrying a phoenix and surrounded by a snake. The decorative elements, such as the shell, feathers and scales, are engraved. The face of the turtle is in the shape of a dragon, with its mouth half-open and showing its teeth. In good condition with patina due to age.

During the Han dynasty a tradition of sculpture emerged with a greater interest in depicting fabulous animals and beasts in durable materials such as jade. Inspired by Taoist philosophy, which began to spread among the upper echelons, who sought immortality. Monumental stone sculptures of animals and their small jade counterparts were found in the tombs. It is believed that they were meant to protect their owner and open the way to paradise.
