Description.
Carved wood from Chenxiangmu, in the form of a cup that widens at the top. It is carved on the outside and depicts a continuous scene with characters and a landscape. Cups of this type are characteristically carved in one piece, using rich materials, although they were usually made of wood or bamboo for ornamental purposes. In very good condition with patina and on a carved wooden base.
Chenxiangmu wood is one of the most highly prized woods in Chinese culture for its medicinal and aromatic qualities, and is even used as incense. There are few large-scale figures carved from this wood, as it is extremely rare. Qing Dynasty (1644–1912).
