UPCOMING LIVE AUCTION DECEMBER 20, 2023 - ASIAN ART

'Cong' vase with a celadon glaze "geyao", Yuan-Ming dynasty

Awarded For. 11.000 €
Lot 44.
Description.

Porcelain covered with a thick, lustrous, celadon-blue-grey 'geyao' glaze (哥窑) with a crackled texture. The crackle shows a shade close to dark brown and cream-coloured. Impurities are visible in the glaze due to the kiln-fired method of manufacture. The figure comes from the old 'cong' shape with square-section rims and raised horizontal bands. It stands on a foot and is surmounted by a neck, both of which are short. In good condition commensurate with its age, with patina and a hole in the lower part.

The 哥窯 (Geyao) kiln was one of the five most famous kilns from the Song Dynasty and is remembered throughout the ages in the history of Chinese ceramics. The glazed ware known as 'Geyao' belongs to the celadon category because of its colour, which can vary from bluish-grey through cream to light greenish-blue. The most distinctive feature is the elegant grey-black or yellow-apricot crackle.
