Description.
White-glazed ceramic with red decoration, underglaze (釉里红). It consists of a tall, conical, bamboo-shaped foot that supports a flaring vessel with high walls. On the outside, it is surrounded by a band of classical copper-red flowering scrolls, encircled by two rings.
During the Yuan dynasty, potters in Jingdezhen began experimenting with copper pigments applied to glazes. It is a type of pigment that is unstable during firing and can be diluted to the point of disappearing, as in some leaf ends. And if applied in excess, it takes on too strong a tone.
