Description.
According to Johan Nieuhof (1618 - 1672) from 1668 or later. Nieuhof was a Dutch traveller who documented his travels in Brazil, China and India. The book "Legatio batavica ad magnum Tartariæ chamum Sungteium (...)" (p.40-41) in its Latin edition contains this map.
Engraving on copperplate, illuminated on paper. Very detailed plan of Canton (Guangzhou), looking from the water towards the city. At the top left is the inscription "Kantonis Plana effigies", followed by a key identifying the main points of interest. The mark of the plate, a central crease, flaws and wear are visible.
