These types of rocks were common in traditional Chinese gardens and are named Gongshi (供石), also known as "scholar's rocks", are natural rock-shaped objects prized since ancient times by Chinese scholars. They are directly related to the Japanese term "suiseki" which refers to a small stone that without any manipulation has shape and colors reminiscent of a landscape or formation in nature.
