Julio García Gutiérrez (1882 - 1966) was born in Paris and moved to Barcelona when he was very young, where he exhibited regularly from 1918. He was director of the Barcelona School of Fine Arts (1940-42) and of the School of Arts and Crafts (1940-46). He cultivated a type of fiery, solitary marine painting which, despite its conventionalism, made him quite popularly known.
