Description.
Carved wood with polychrome. It represents Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the Shuiyue Guanyin posture contemplating the reflection of the moon in the water in tune with the sounds of the world, very much represented in Chinese Buddhist sculpture. The details of the figure are expertly carved from the clothing, hands and feet, face and headdress.
Avalokiteshvara became popular as the deity who answers prayers and protects the faithful from catastrophes. Guanyin wood carvings experienced their heyday shortly after the Song period.
