Set of jade sword ornaments, Han dynasty

Awarded For. 3.800 €
Lot 11.
Description.

A set of four jade sword ornaments carved with decorative bas-reliefs: animal-face, curling clouds and geometric patterns.

The set consists of different pieces that were attached to the sword. The piece used at the end of the handle, called the sword head (剑首), is round with spiral detailing. The piece fitted between the shank and the sword was called a sword tang. It has a pointed shape and a "taotie" face. At the lower end of the scabbard 劍(珌) another piece is used with a trapezoidal appearance and holes at the top. The last piece is used to anchor belts to the side of the scabbard. Both of these pieces are engraved with curly clouds and geometric patterns.

The use of such pieces was reserved for aristocratic men and officials as a symbol of status or power. The decorations on the swords show various patterns and techniques.
