The depiction of "two dragons playing with pearls" (二龍戲珠) originates from Chinese folklore. The legend says that two green dragons saved the fairies from a demon. For their actions they received a golden bead that would allow them to cultivate themselves into immortals. None of the green dragons wanted to take it all, so they were humble and transmitted it to each other, shining with a golden light. The devoted cultivation, kindness and loyalty of both made the "Jade Emperor" grant them another one to finally transform into immortals. Afterwards, they cared for the people nearby, sending wind and rain for them to live a peaceful life. The people did not forget that green dragons brought benefits to people and admired their virtues, so they built temples to worship them. Over time, the scene is associated with festive and auspicious actions. They also symbolize mutual respect, humility and tolerance between husband and wife, so this theme is also commonly used in weddings.
