White jade tiger amulet, Western Han dynasty

Awarded For. 900 €
Lot 82.
Description.

Amulet of white jade, with reddish-golden spots. The amulet is divided into two parts that fit together in the middle with a central Chinese character as part and counterpart. The outer part of each has the volume and shape of a tiger, which shows its teeth and front claws. The tails are tucked up in a spiral shape. On the back and side are engraved characters that acquire meaning when the pieces are put together: "杜陽左一 杜陽泰守維護第一".

During the Han dynasty a sculptural tradition emerged with greater interest in the depiction of fabulous animals and beasts in durable materials such as jade. In this case it is a type of talisman in the form of a tiger for sending messages between troops and generals.
