"Hulu" bottle with carved decoration, Yaozhou, Song dynasty.
Vase in the shape of a 'hulu' gourd with carved decoration. The decoration is divided into bands and bounded by a double circle depicting continuous scenes of fish, aquatic plants, bubbles and lotus flowers. The bands that form the main strata represent borders of lotus petals and leaves. The glaze is glossy with transparency and crystalline in a celadon-olive-green colour that is concentrated in the lines of the pattern.
The Yaozhou (耀州窑) kiln, located in Saanxi Province, began production in the Tang Dynasty and reached its peak in the Song Dynasty, becoming one of the main kilns of the Song Dynasty. They mainly produced celadon-glazed wares popular in the Northern Song Dynasty.
The piece is in perfect condition with no cracks or restorations.
