Oval "Wealth" agate plaque, Qing dynasty, Qianlong

An oval plaque carved from a single piece of agate. It depicts three rodents carved on the front face. They match the tone of the agate. It is in very good condition. This piece is delicate, with bright tones and smooth lines.

Heilongjiang agate is found in the northwest of the province. This carbon dioxide mineral is of gem grade and is a variant of chalcedony. Agate from this region has beautiful and warm colours, rich colours and a hard texture, very useful for carved crafts. This product was used as a tribute in the Qing dynasty. 

In traditional Chinese culture it is explained that rats like to attract wealth and are related to: prosperous business, getting rich through hard work and good offspring, among others. It is related to the Chinese expression "招財進寶" (to attract wealth and treasure).
