Silver and gold-plated amulet-rattle-silver whistle, 17th century
A traditional Spanish silver amulet from the 17th century. It has the central image of a mythological mermaid, with a curled tail and a body covered in fine jewels, from which hang beautiful bells that transform it into a rattle and on which is a long, thin whistle in the shape of a bugle. All this is arranged on a long chain of fine decorative links with geometric patterns joined together by small ‘S’-type hooks.
This type of object combines a utilitarian and symbolic meaning, offering both distraction and protection from evil and witchcraft. The combined use of gold and silver gives it value and status, symbolising the union between the sun and the moon.
Dimensions: 31.5 x 9 x 2 cm (approx.)
