White jade figure ‘Sages on the mountain’, Qing dynasty

Carved white jade, with beautiful reddish and golden flecks. Carved according to the natural morphology of the stone, with rounded edges, it shows in the centre, in bas-relief, a scene in which two wise men are arranged inside a grotto, surrounded by steep rocks and thick trees. At the back, following the scene, a small, solitary deer is shown climbing among the rocks. The stone is set on a finely carved wooden base, which was made to size. Qing Dynasty (1644-1912)
