SPECIAL CHRISTMAS AUCTION, 27TH DECEMBER 2024 - 1ST SESSION: ASIAN ART
Zhao Shao'Ang (1905-1998) ‘Sparrow on a Gourd’, 20th century
Ink, watercolour and pigments on paper. With a carved silk frame.
It shows, in a horizontal composition, an elongated, twisted branch full of leaves that ends in a small gourd, where a sparrow perches. The bird is in a threatening and dynamic position, with its legs bent, its body leaning slightly forward, its wings tucked in close to its body, large eyes and open beak.
The colouring of the piece is characteristic, combining areas in black ink with hints of vibrant orange and green, which add liveliness to the work. This combination of techniques and colours is key to the artist's work.
